The Crossover Alliance Anthology - Volume 1 (Book Review)

Image
Review by Kim Wicke General Thoughts With nine stories by seven different authors, this anthology offers a good mix of the speculative genres, from the barely-futuristic to the fabulous.  I am slightly disappointed that none of the selections scratched my itch for classic high fantasy, but the variety was wide enough that I was able to find other things I liked almost as much.  If your personal preferences run more towards sci-fi or horror, you probably won’t feel even that small lack, and there’s definitely at least a little something here for everyone. Despite the variety on display, though, I did notice one odd similarity running through several tales.  Four out of nine stories contain the following formula: something bad happens to the protagonist’s daughter, which consumes said protagonist’s mind and drives all of his (or in one instance, her) actions.  After two stories in a row featuring this device, I started mentally bracing myself as soon as any character was r

In Search Of Truth, Hebrews 11:8-12

Image
(ESV) By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. As the author of Hebrews highlights examples of faith from Israel's past, he invests extra time looking at the father of the nation, Abraham. v. 8-10 Abraham's faith was exercised by following God's command to leave his security and familiar surroundings to go to an unknown pl

Intro to Retro Rewind Podcast

Image
As a podcast fan, I come across people saying they have a podcast, and we should check them out. I'll admit, I am a skeptical person, but if the topic is at all interesting, I try to check them out with an open mind. Personally, I think we Geeky Christian podcast listeners have an embarrassment of riches, and when this Francisco guy pops up on the CGC and says he runs a podcast and, on top of that, it is a podcast about retro movies and games and such... well, I need to check that out, don't I? So glad I did. Francisco Ruiz and Paul J Powers are the hosts, with guests, that definitely pull their own weight, showing up as well. I don't always agree with their conclusions, but they have a cool way of getting to those conclusions. Now, in a break from my regular style, the guys made a youtube video to answer the 20 questions, and I think it gives an extra bit of insight into their individual identity.  Below, I will put the printed answers, for those who don't like cha

Classic Who: Battlefield review

Image
Doctor Who fans may have noticed that the annual 'female Doctor' debate was reopened recently by none other than Sylvester McCoy himself. So I'm going to blatantly cash in, and offer my opinion through the medium of a review of a Seventh Doctor story. Battlefield is not the best of McCoy era Who; neither is it particular bad, it just happens to be the only Seventh Doctor story I've watched recently. It is, in fairness, a mixed bag; cheesy in many ways, but it’s old skool Who, what else should it be? It has a sense of humour that might have been brilliant in the hands of Douglas Adams & Tom Baker, but does at times get a bit silly here. The Arthurian knights from another dimension and the fact that the Doctor, at some point in his future, apparently becomes Merlin, should have been brilliant; unfortunately the fight scenes are mostly just too slow to be believable, and the fact that the knight-aliens slipped into our dimension via a massive plot-hole (or at

In Search Of Truth, Hebrews 11:6-7

Image
v.6 Last time we looked at this chapter I made the observation from verse 5 that we can actually give pleasure to the infinite Creator and Ruler of all reality by trusting (having faith) in him. Verse 6 takes it a step further and tells us that pleasing God is IMPOSSIBLE without faith!

In Search Of Truth, Hebrews 11:5

Image
v. 5 We know very little about Enoch. In the Bible he is mentioned only briefly in the Bible and usually as no more than a detail of genealogy or geography. In Jude 1:14 he is called “the seventh from Adam”, likely only because his name appears 7th in order in two Old Testament genealogies beginning with Adam. (Genesis 5, 1 Chronicles 1)  Jude, in talking about people who have entered the Christian community and warped the truth, said: It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)  Jude is actually quoting “The Book Of Enoch” here. This non-canonical book has never been considered scripture by mainstream Judaism or Christianity. It's not a book that Je

Introduction to "In Search Of Truth", and Hebrews 11:2-4

Welcome to "In Search Of Truth"! In this recurring feature (which will now find it's home exclusively here at Christian Geek Central) I attempt to examine the Bible  and dissect some of the churchy language we take for granted, digging into history and languages when I'm able to try and get at the heart of the text so we can hopefully see and apply some of what God has for us Geeks in these words today. I'm not formally trained in scripture, just a guy using resources and a questioning mind to try and get at the truth, and I hope you'll do that with me.  If you'd prefer a version of this feature you can listen to, you'll find the same material (roughly) on The Spirit Blade Underground Podcast, which is also published each week on Christian Geek Central and at spiritblade.com. The format is usually a verse-by-verse look at a book of the Bible, with some detours into topical studies now and then.   On the Spirit Blade Underground Weblog (the
