E3 2013: Nintendo, Game Developers and "The Xbox 180"

Image
As I wrap up my thoughts on E3 2013 I'll focus on what Nintendo brought to the convention (or rather, to the internet just BEFORE the convention) that interested me, some other games that caught my eye and Microsoft's unprecedented post-convention "180" regarding their Xbox One plans, which they announced on Wednesday. Nintendo Direct Video In place of a stage show at the conference, Nintendo released a 40 minute video online showcasing the games they plan to release in the near future. They still had a large booth at the convention, but it remains to be seen whether or not skipping a stage show will help or hurt them this year. Of note to me were some of the third party games for Wii U, such as Assassin's Creed 4, Batman: Arkham Origins, Deus Ex: Human Revolution- Director's Cut, Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure (this one I may buy on PC to play with my son!), Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Watch Dogs. I don't

E3 2013, Sony PS4 Conference

Image
Continuing my impressions of E3 2013, I'm focusing this time on: The Sony PS4 Conference From the very beginning, Sony emphasized again the focus on making a system that game  developers would want to make games for. In creating the new console, Sony sought the input of some of the world's most popular game development studios. This gives the strong impression that the next generation of games will best be experienced on the PS4. "Beyond: Two Souls". A cinematic-style game starring Ellen Paige and Willem Defoe, that will be exclusive to Playstation. I'm certainly intrigued, but even a year after the game first debuted at E3 2012 I still have no idea what this game is going to be. Both demos I saw of this game make it look very story-driven, maybe to a fault. I almost wonder if it will be a turn in the direction of the classic arcade game "Dragon's Lair", in which you basically watch a cartoon and every now and then hit a

E3 2013, Xbox One Press Conference

Image
Last week I spent a lot of time online, absorbing as much content from E3 as I could handle. I took in the Xbox One and PS4 Press Conferences, as well as the conferences of Activision and EA Games. Different things will stand out to different gamers when watching coverage for an event like this. So first a little background on me as a gamer so you can better decide how to interpret my reactions to elements of E3. I'm primarily interested in RPGs, be they turn-based, action, or some hybrid. I'm not a fan of shooters or any other kind of action games, simply because I'm terrible at them. But I think I can appreciate good graphics and ingenuity even in games I won't play myself. I'm also a gamer who doesn't play online, preferring solitude as I game most of the time. I'm a passionate but uncompetitive gamer and love consoles for the ways in which they differ from PCs. (Games work when you stick them in, no upgrading or cali

Man Of Steel (Movie Review)

Image
I'm a big fan of superhero comics, and especially the DC Universe, home of the world's first and greatest superhero, Superman. So naturally I've been curious, and more recently very excited, to see what "300", "Watchmen", and "Suckerpunch" director Zack Snyder would do with the character. Having been blown away by all of Snyder's previous live-action film efforts, I waited with hope and anticipation that his signature style would work for "Man Of Steel".

Xbox One Reveal Vs. Sony PS4

Image
Although I was originally planning to wait until after E3 to talk about next-gen console news, the controversy surrounding the new Xbox console and their recent press conference were both too tempting to keep me waiting in silence. (Although I'm sure there will be even more to talk about after E3.) Near the beginning of the Xbox conference, it was stated that the development team gave themselves a "new mission" with this console. To create an "all in one system". With this as their top priority, they named the upcoming system "The Xbox One". I'll let you check out the conference for yourself here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bFVptu6QbY In the meantime, some points that popped out to me included: 1. The system is "built to amaze on day one and continuously improve over the generation ahead" I'm not sure how this is possible, unless the rumors of being constantly online are true and processing p

Dante's Inferno (Movie Review)

Image
In 2010, Stars Media released "Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic", based on the action fantasy video game that re-imagined the classic poet's most famous work as a bloody hack 'n slash romp through hell. I haven't played the game or read Dante's original work, so my opinion on this movie is based only on the content it provides. In Dante's Inferno, Dante is a soldier who returns from the crusades to find his love, Beatrice, dying in a pool of blood. After a bittersweet exchange, Dante watches her soul begin to ascend to heaven, only to be intercepted by Satan, who claims he has the right to take her to hell because of a vow that Dante has broken. Dante chases Satan to the gates of hell and follows him into the fiery pits, stopping at nothing to save Beatrice from an eternal torment she does not deserve. There are a few anime films I've really enjoyed, but I stay away from most of them. I have a strong aversion to the strange vo
