Into the Longbox: Titan Comics Doctor Who

Image
I'm afraid my association with DoctorWho is not as extensive or storied as it could be. I watched Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen on PBS with the rest of my generation but I was always more interested in Star Wars and Star Trek, Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica. Still, Tom Baker is who I think of as the Doctor and the Fourth Doctor is my Doctor. I have friends who are massive Doctor Who fans and I distinctly remember when Paul McGann's Doctor movie first premiered that we all threw a party for the advent of the Eighth Doctor. One day, my daughter excitedly grabbed my arm and said, “D ad, you've got to see this show!” She turned on BBC America and there was David Tennant and Billie Piper saving the world. She explained patiently, “This is a rerun. He's the Doctor but he regenerates into new actors. Peter Capaldi will be the Doctor soon!” I smiled, secure in the knowledge that I had done at least one thing right in her upbringing. Fueled by my daughter's

Red Dwarf: Bodysnatcher

Image
Once again it’s been far too long since we dipped our toes in the goldfish shoals of Red Dwarf, so to avoid any glaring continuity errors, today I’m taking a look at Bodysnatcher, the ‘lost episode’ from Red Dwarf season 1. For the tenth anniversary of Red Dwarf the Bodysnatcher script was finished, recorded as an audio storyboard by Chris Barrie, and made the headline act when Red Dwarf Re-mastered was released on DVD as ‘The Bodysnatcher Collection’. The title of the story comes from Rimmer’s slightly unhinged attempt to create (with the help of the skutters and their sonic screwdrivers – is that the only mention of such a tool in Red Dwarf?) a solid body for himself from Lister’s eyebrows. Lister, having also lost his beloved dreads to this project, gets a little annoyed and switches Rimmer’s hologram off, planning to replace him with someone less psychotic. Unfortunately Rimmer is one step ahead and has already hidden all the holodisks, leaving Lister with a choice of eith

Being Patient, Tolerant And Unified Geeks (In Search Of Truth, Ephesians 4:1-3, Part 2)

Image
Ephesians 4:1-3 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Paul has begun describing what it looks like to pursue a life worthy of the calling we have as believers in Jesus. Last time we looked at humility and gentleness. This time we'll look at patience, bearing with one another in love, and eagerness to maintain unity. 1. Patience. The Greek word here refers to endurance, perseverance and slowness to avenging wrongs while bearing troubles or ills. 2. Bearing with one another in love. Once again the Greek word for "love" here is "agape", a selfless love that prioritizes the well-being of others. And in this context, it's a love that enables us to put up with those who make our lives more difficult. 3. Eagerness to main

The Humble, Gentle Geek (In Search Of Truth, Ephesians 4:1-3, Part 1)

Image
(Ephesians 4:1-3, ESV) 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Paul transitions now from a heavily doctrinal focus to a more practical one, although the doctrinal concepts are still interwoven. In fact it is because of and in light of those doctrinal realities (summarized last time) that we should pursue what Paul and the Holy Spirit are calling us to beginning in Chapter 4. v.1 When Paul urges readers to walk in a manner "worthy" of their calling, the Greek word for "worthy" he uses means literally "bringing up the other beam of the scales", and so implies equal balance. In other words, the way we go about our daily lives should fit with what God is calling us to as his followers. If we don't feel some sobering
