(Hebrews 12:18-24, ESV) For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Why should we push forward in our pursuit of life with Jesus? The author has previously given us instruction on how to view the suffering we encounter, but why

Episode three of Red Dwarf's first season, Balance of Power is a change of pace from the gag-laden sci-fi of the first two episodes to more of a traditional sitcom set-up. The story opens with Lister getting bored of counting irradiated haggis, which presumably he only does because Rimmer has confiscated his cigarettes. In order to relieve the tension slightly, Lister wants to go on a date – to bring Kochanski back, albeit in hologram form, for one evening. This suggestion leads to some comedy with the swapping of hologram discs – three episodes in we already hated Rimmer enough to root for the ‘arm of a Danish moron’ when it starts to rebel – and ultimately to Lister deciding to become an officer, outrank Rimmer, and order him to hand over the holodiscs. The is a slight nod towards philosophy, as Holly explains why he brought Rimmer back to keep Lister sane, as opposed to one of Dave’s drinking buddies: HOLLY: Jean-Paul Sartre said Hell was being locked forever in a ro

We've been away from Hebrews for awhile and I'm very excited to jump back in. But before moving forward I'd like to once again zoom out and get an updated overview of the book so far to help give context to the text as we zoom back in next time. A significant theme of Hebrews has been "holding on to hope and confidence in Yahweh so that we can be engaged in his plans and experience his blessing and rest". Some quick chapter overviews: (Chapter 1) Jesus is superior to all messengers of God that came before him and the "heir" of all things in creation. (Believers are also referred to in verse 14 as those who "inherit salvation".) (Chapter 2) Jesus is the source of our rescue from the power and penalty of sin. We are warned not to neglect the ongoing rescue Jesus offers. (Chapters 3-5) There is a rest still available for God's people that the Israelites neglected. A rest found in our pursuit of God and participation

It seems about three million years ago that I started the Great Red Dwarf Re-watch here at CGC; sorry about that, but we'll try and make it a bit more of a regular feature from here on, starting with the first post-pilot episode, Future Echoes. With the premise set up, Future Echoes had the task of setting the pace for the rest of the series. In fact it was filmed later and slotted in as episode two because it did just that, and did it well; Future Echoes defines ‘sitcom with proper sci-fi bits’. In case we missed The End, the scenario is re-capped in an introductory ‘distress call’ by Holly, and then it’s straight into Lister and Rimmer antagonising each other. The bickering between Lister and Rimmer is really the heart of this episode - as it is for much of the series - although Cat does have a couple of amusing moments (following Rimmer into the bunk room, staring at his Helen Shapiro hairdo) and character-defining lines: Two suits is dead! We also meet talkie toaster
