Hebrews 11:17-22(ESV) By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones. Beginning with the example of Abraham, the author of Hebrews has begun specifically highlighting that aspect of faith that trusts in the future blessings God promises his people. You can look back and see this subtle shift begin in verse 8. Once again, this fits into the context of the rest of the book of Hebrews, much of which we've summ...

My wife and I took a rare opportunity to leave the kids behind and run off to Hollywood! We spent a day at Universal and another at Warner Brothers and came away with some awesome, geeky memories and a few tidbits to share! The sign on the chair warns that if you sit in the chair you will make Morpheus angry. Wouldn't want to do that. Seeing it up close was plenty cool! (Those legs up above belong to a bunch of "Smiths".) At 6'3 with a wife at 5'8 it was fun to have her looking down at me for a change at Bilbo's place. It was really weird when I turned 34 and realized that my mental image of Jesus (pre-resurrection) should now always look younger than me. A lesser yet similar feeling overcame me as I realized, standing next to his costume, that Henry Cavill's "Superman" has shoulders that are just a little lower than mine. It feels wrong to be taller than Superman. Of course it's also no fun to be rounder than Superman... ...

The author of Hebrews has spent most of this chapter so far giving us examples of faith in action. Abel trusted his well-being to God so much that he give him his best profits. Enoch trusted that God would set everything right one day (Jude 1:14-15) and in the meantime chose to walk through day-to-day life with Yahweh as his trusted companion. And his faith pleased God so much that God spared him from physical death! Despite being surrounded by people who lived radically different from him and indulged in every sin they desired, Noah trusted that living life God's way was best and trusted him when he said the unthinkable would happen. Abraham trusted God enough to leave behind his comfortable life and societal connections, and follow God to a completely unknown place where he would spend the rest of his life. v.13 All of these people had at least one thing in common. They all died trusting in God, despite not yet receiving "the things promised". This might seem ...
