NEWS-NET: Comics
BY TIM O’DONNELL
What
is NEWS-NET: Comics?
NEWS-NET: Comics is in
part a way for CGC to highlight a sampling of all the news and rumors that
interested a particular author recently as they trawl through the Internet.
My specific focus is on comics and superheroes
especially as they cross over from sequential art into movies, TV shows, and
video games.
::EDITORIAL::
Well, it’s been
several weeks since I last posted. Between a HUGE transition at my job and some
weird hours and my PC biting the dust, it hasn’t been easy to get a post out.
Add to that a 21 day fast this month that included a media fast and you have
one big recipe for a lot of Ketchup. (I’m here all week!)
But now I’m back in the saddle and even
though my home computer is broken, I’m not letting that stop me from talking
about the literal PLETHORA of news items we’ve had come out in my absence.
In
fact, there is so much news that I may need a few posts to catch everything.
::NEWS APLENTY::
CATCHING UP
Amidst the Star Wars Episode VII and Jurassic
World Teaser Trailers, the comic book world has NOT been left out in the cold.
We’ve had not one but TWO Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailers.
And
then we had the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 Lineup announcement
to
match the previous DC Cinematic Universe Announcement
SUICIDE SQUAD
Of course some of the best news
fit to print is the casting of the Suicide Squad movie coming in 2016 just
after the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Jared Leto
as Joker
Will Smith
as Deadshot
Tom Hardy
has since bowed out as Rick Flagg
Margot
Robbie as Harley Quinn
Jai
Courtney as Boomerang
Cara
Delevigne as Enchantress.
David Ayer will Direct
Jesse Eisenberg is in talks to cameo as Lex Luthor in the movie as
well.
Who will play Amanda Waller? Warner Bros was considering Viola Davis,
Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey. Why is CCH Pounder not on this list?
It looked, for a week or so, that Warner was looking at Oprah
pretty seriously to fill that role, but thankfully they look as if they have
confirmed (by the Director) that Viola Davis will take the role. Personally I
prefer CCH Pounder, BUT if it has to be someone else, I believe the Viola Davis
is the next best person to play The WALL.
Also, rumors swirl that Ben Affleck’s Batman will make a cameo
appearance in this movie as well. Will we see Batman be the Nick Fury of the DC
Universe.
OTHER DC NEWS
Supergirl
Greg Berlanti, producer of Arrow and The Flash, is developing a
Supergirl tv show on CBS.
Previously being eyed to play Kara Zor-El was The Vampire Diaries’
Claire Holt.
Now confirmed as the famous cousin to the iconic Kryptonian, is
Melissa Benoist of Glee.
The script for “Dark Universe”, Guillermo Del Toro’s take on
Justice League: Dark has been turned in to Warner Bros.
This story will feature DC’s supernatural characters such as John
Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman and Zatanna.
Wonder Woman
Michelle MacLaren has been announced as the director for the 2017 Wonder Woman movie staring Gal Gadot who will reprise her role from the upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Though MacLaren reports that the first Comic Book Superhero movie to have a female lead hasn't been officially greenlit. This is most probably because Warner Bros. does not yet have a script, NOT because they are unsure if the project will move forward.
MacLaren has been a producer and director on Breaking Bad and has also directed episodes of The Walking Dead and Game Of Thrones.
There are a few rumors going around that there are as many as 6 separate scripts in development for this movie. Rumors about the potential plot of the movie are scarce, but one good possibility is perhaps something close to how the Wonder Woman comic was rebooted in the new 52. Wonder Woman may be DC's take on mythology in a way that is in contrast with the "Advanced Aliens" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Look for another post focusing on more DC's TV Shows and another focusing more on what Marvel is doing.
