The Crossover Alliance Expands To Include More Genres

Image
David Alderman of The Crossover Alliance recently announced that the publishing company would be expanding its book catalog to include genres outside the "speculative" settings they've focused on up to this point. " What began as an experiment in publishing a Christian thriller – Mark Carver’s  Beast , has proven to us that there is an audience for all sorts of different genres of Christian fiction. So beginning today, we open our doors to a wider array of Christian fiction genres. We’ll start taking – among the speculative genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror – westerns, thrillers, historical, supernatural, mystery, and just about any genre of fiction you can imagine as long as it doesn’t shy away from telling a true story – however edgy it may be – and it seeks to bring light to a dark world. There are a few exceptions though, as we will not currently be taking sweet romance or young adult fiction – but there may be plans to in the future." No ...

Living For The Moment Vs. Living For Eternity (In Search Of Truth, Hebrews 11:34-35)

Image
(Hebrews 11:34-35, ESV) quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. After the author's list of those who displayed great faith in the Old Testament is another list of things that happened as a result of that faith. Through faith, believers in Yahweh have seen and done incredible things throughout history, and we're continuing to look at some of those things in these two verses. The believers that "quenched the power of fire" probably refers specifically to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who refused to worship the golden statue that the king had built. The king sentenced them to death by burning furnace for their disobedience. But Yahweh kept the fire from harming them even as they stood in the middle of a furnace so h...

How Faith Actually Changes Our Circumstances (In Search Of Truth, Hebrews 11:32-33)

Image
(Hebrews 11:32-33, ESV) And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets—who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, We've been looking at a list of names the author of Hebrews assembled to exemplify faith in the lives of well-known believers. With each name on the list we looked back at their stories in the Tanakh ("Old Testament") and tried to make some observations about what made their faith a good example for us today. At the end of the list the author simple refers to "the prophets", which would have referred to numerous believers in ancient times who served Yahweh and spoke for him to the people of Israel. This would include Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the twelve prophets who wrote the smaller books of the Old Testament. Trying to zoom in and look at each of these lives in detail i...

If You Think Faith Is Unpopular In The Movie Business, You're Not Imagining It

Image
On this site we like to both celebrate and examine the ideas presented in geek entertainment, and that often comes with making distinctions between the worldviews most often presented in movies and the view of life the Bible presents. I'm not suggesting we have hate or anger toward Hollywood creators, but their (general) tendency to reject Christianity as they tell stories is something worth being aware of as we enjoy entertainment. I realize that may sound a bit like a self-absorbed conspiracy-minded pity party (and we can certainly be guilty of perpetuating an "us and them" mentality), but the tendency exists, as Jennifer Garner (of Alias and Elektra, to name some of her geek entertainment credits) herself expressed in a recent interview promoting her new movie "Miracles From Heaven". (See the video below for her comments)
