Solomon Kane (Movie Review)

Image
Solomon Kane is a "witch hunter" living in a pseudo-fantasy version of the 16th century. Imagined by Conan creator Robert E. Howard, Solomon is likewise a dark character in a dark world, and fans of dark fantasy waited with anticipation for the release of this movie. Fans in the U.S. have waited even longer. Although Solomon Kane released in Europe in 2009, for reasons still not made public the film was continually delayed for distribution in the United States. As a fan of dark fantasy I was both frustrated by this delay and made pessimistic by it. I was eager to see another dark sword and sorcery film, given that the sub-genre is so rare despite the success of the Lord of The Rings Trilogy. But the delay in distribution made me wonder: Would this movie really be delayed like this if it was a quality product? So I became somewhat content to wait, desiring a dark fantasy film, but in no rush to watch a bad one. About a year ago the movie slipped quietly in and out of l

The Wolverine (Movie Review)

Image
I sat down to watch The Wolverine not expecting a great movie. The trailers I had seen featured action sequences obviously filmed in front of green screen, giving the impression that this movie didn't have the budget it needed to tell a truly great superhero story. (Okay, Wolverine/Logan is an anti-hero, but you know what I mean.) Still, I knew this movie was highly anticipated by many geeks, so I carved out the time and sat in the theater to see what would come of this second attempt at a Wolverine solo movie. I was surprised by what I got. In some ways good, and in some ways bad. The Wolverine picks up at some point after the events of X-Men 3: The Last Stand. At the end of that movie (spoiler warning!!) Wolverine is forced to kill the woman he loves, Jean Grey, to prevent her from murdering countless humans and mutants. At the start of "The Wolverine", Logan has cut himself off from past associations, vowing to never again hurt another person. He is

The Maze, By Jason Brannon (Two Perspectives, Two Reviews)

Image
Review #1 By "Professor Alan" (A copy of the work was provided by the publisher for this review) Jamie Burroughs seems like a thoroughly decent man, with a wife (Amy) and son (Peter). But when he runs into an old girlfriend (Karen) one day at lunch, he quickly finds himself wandering down dark paths of temptation. On the verge of committing adultery with Karen, an angel-faced man snatches him away into a dark labyrinth. This maze, created by angels and demons, is constructed around Jamie's personal sins and weaknesses. He must escape to save not just his own life, but those of Amy & Peter, as well. The majority of the action takes place in this maze, with Jamie narrating his trauma and travails. He has to solve bizarre puzzles, face demons and monsters, and repent and grow. As exciting as this part of the book should be, there is an issue of pacing, and the book noticeably slows when Jamie enters the labyrinth. And there is a repetitive nature of J

The Future Of Christian Geek Central

Image
Toward the end of June I did some thinking about the future of Spirit Blade Productions and Christian Geek Central in specific. I settled on some conclusions that, while not entirely new ideas to me, were still considerable game-changers regarding how Christian Geek Central will move forward. Since the fall of 2006, Spirit Blade Productions has been largely a solo effort. My wife does the book-keeping for our taxes, but everything else pretty much gets done by me. It's not ideal, but I've accepted it. After all, I'm doing something that, monetarily speaking, isn't the most sought after occupation. So asking others to join me out on the limb and invest without financial return has never really been an option I've considered. And none of that has really changed. But Christian Geek Central is a different story. It's an endeavor produced and supported by the resources of Spirit Blade Productions, but one that will never be realized if I am the only
