Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (Board Game Review)

Image
Review by Paeter Frandsen I'm a big fan of the "dungeon crawl" genre of board games, especially those that are cooperative or feature a "game master" player. However, In the last few years I've been continually disappointed in the options for games of this kind. So when I heard that Paizo Publishing was planning to create a card game that attempted to distill the Pathfinder RPG experience into a shorter, lighter, card-based experience, I was intensely interested in seeing the result. Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise Of The Runelords is a mouthful. But that may be appropriate, as there is a lot going on inside this game box. Rise Of The Runelords is the name of an "Adventure Path," one of a series of adventures that will be released as expansions over the coming year. Each Adventure Path is itself composed of multiple "scenarios," which each take 90 minutes or so to play. Rise Of The Runelords comes with several introdu

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (Movie Review)

Image
Review by Ken from Honolulu Earlier this year, writer and director Tommy Wirkola released his latest work, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters .   This was a horror/action take on Grimm’s classic tale, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Atherton as the titular siblings.   In this version, Hansel and Gretel are bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.   However, as the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold the key to their own past. I give this movie an eight on the quality scale. It is well filmed, the CG isn’t that bad, and the acting is fairly decent.   When it comes to the plot, though, things begin to fall apart. When you watch movies and plays, it is expected that you suspend disbelief temporarily, so that you can engage with the story.   However, with this film you not only have to suspend disbelief, you have to throw it on the floor, stomp on it, and then fling it out the window.   This film is co

What CGC Geeks Are Thankful For

Image
(1st Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  (Philippians 4:5-6, ESV) Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. When I'm feeling bummed or in just a bit of a funk, I find that scripture is wise to instruct us to "give thanks in all circumstances" and "in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Every circumstance is a good circumstance to express thankfulness to God. Sometimes when we talk about what we're thankful for, the massive things come to mind, like salvation and God's love. But just as often we can express thankfulness for all the little tiny things that give us pleasure. Recently I asked my fellow geeks on

Thor: The Dark World (Movie Review)

Image
Review by Paeter Frandsen I don't like Thor as a superhero. He speaks in a ridiculous version of old English and has giant feathery wings on his helmet. In a world of superheroes he feels to me like the result of a writer running out of ideas and just transplanting an established myth into a comic book setting. That said, I find the Ultimate Marvel Universe version of Thor much more interesting and the film version works even better for my tastes. (Except for the fact that his name is still Thor. I still think that's dumb.) Thor: The Dark World picks up where The Avengers leaves off. Thor's evil half-brother Loki is led to the dungeons of Asgard as Thor endeavors to clean up the mess made by the sadistic trickster. Meanwhile, the Nine Realms are entering a state of convergence only achieved every 5,000 years, making it possible for an ancient race of evil elves to awaken a devastating weapon capable of destroying the universe. If the plot sounds pretty s

Ender's Game (Movie Review)

Image
Review by Paeter Frandsen For years I've been told by more people than I can count that I should read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. It is a considered a classic among sci-fi fans and is even enjoyed by nominal fans of the genre. I haven't gotten around to reading it, because for some strange reason I strongly prefer the fantasy genre when I sit down to read a novel. For my tastes, sci-fi generally works best on the screen. However, that may not be the case with Ender's Game . In the distant future, humanity is training the world's most brilliant children to be master military strategists. Decades before the story begins, humanity barely survived an attack by an alien race. Years later they are in conflict with them once again. Ender Wiggan is a young boy in the strategic military training program. He is more promising than any other student in the program, but must still be put through rigorous training and testing to ensure that he is truly read
